The MAX3232ESE is a 3.3V-powered RS-232 transceiver from Analog Devices (Maxim Integrated) that provides two drivers and two receivers for full-duplex RS-232 communication. The internal dual charge pump generates ±5.4V RS-232 output levels from a single 3.0V to 5.5V supply using only four external 0.1µF capacitors. The device supports data rates up to 250kbps and provides ±15kV ESD protection on the RS-232 interface pins, meeting IEC 1000-4-2 requirements. The E-variant (enhanced) is rated for the extended -40°C to +85°C operating temperature range. Slew-rate controlled drivers reduce electromagnetic interference while maintaining compatibility with standard RS-232 receivers.

The MAX3232ESE converts TTL/CMOS logic levels to RS-232 voltage levels and vice versa using an internal dual charge pump and level-shifting circuitry. The charge pump uses a switched-capacitor voltage inverter and doubler to generate +5.4V (V+) and -5.4V (V-) from the 3.3V VCC supply, requiring four external 0.1µF capacitors (C1-C4). The driver circuits translate the 0-3.3V TTL input to ±5.4V RS-232 output levels by switching between the V+ and V- rails. Slew-rate limiting on the driver outputs controls the rise and fall times to approximately 30V/µs, limiting high-frequency spectral content and reducing EMI while maintaining adequate signal integrity at 250kbps. The receiver circuits convert RS-232 input levels (±3V to ±15V) to 0-3.3V TTL/CMOS output levels using a comparator with a threshold between 0.6V and 2.4V. The 1µA shutdown mode (E-variant) disables the charge pump and drivers to conserve battery power in portable applications.

MAX3232ESE is a 3.3-5.5V dual RS-232 transceiver in SOIC-16 with 2Tx/2Rx, 250kbps data rate, and ±15kV ESD protection. It replaces the 5V-only MAX232 for mixed-voltage systems. SP3232 and ST3232 are pin-compatible alternatives. Only four 0.1µF charge pump capacitors are required (vs 1µF for MAX232). For single-port designs, MAX3221 provides 1Mbps in a smaller package.
