The Texas Instruments MAX3232EIDR is a dual-channel RS-232 line driver and receiver with integrated +/-15 kV IEC ESD protection, designed for 3V to 5.5V single-supply operation. It contains two drivers and two receivers, providing a complete DTE/DCE serial port interface with an on-chip dual charge pump that generates the +/-5.4V RS-232 output levels from a single 3.3V or 5V supply. Only four external 0.1 uF capacitors are required for the charge pump. The device operates at data rates up to 250 kbps with a maximum driver output slew rate of 30 V/us, ensuring compliance with TIA/EIA-232-F and ITU V.28 standards. The ESD protection covers all RS-232 bus pins including GND, providing robust immunity against electrostatic discharge events.

The MAX3232EIDR uses an on-chip dual charge pump to generate the positive and negative supply voltages required for RS-232 compliant output levels from a single 3V to 5.5V supply. The first charge pump (C1+/C1-) doubles the input supply to approximately 2x VCC at the V+ pin, while the second charge pump (C2+/C2-) inverts this to produce a negative voltage at the V- pin. These generated rails power the driver output stages, which swing between V+ and V- to produce RS-232 compliant voltage levels (typically +/-5.4V with a 3.3V supply). The receivers convert RS-232 input levels (up to +/-25V) to TTL/CMOS logic levels compatible with the host microcontroller. The charge pump operates at a fixed internal oscillator frequency, and the four external 0.1 uF capacitors serve as the pump and storage elements for both charge pump stages.
