The MAX232CPE from Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated) is the industry-standard dual RS-232 driver/receiver that converts between TTL/CMOS logic levels (0-5V) and RS-232 voltage levels (±5V to ±15V) using only a single 5V power supply. An internal dual charge pump generates approximately +10V and -10V from the 5V input using four external 1µF capacitors, eliminating the need for external ±12V supplies. Each device contains two drivers that invert TTL inputs to RS-232 outputs, and two receivers that invert RS-232 inputs to TTL outputs. The drivers guarantee ±5V minimum output swing under worst-case conditions (3kΩ load, 4.5V VCC), meeting TIA/EIA-232-F requirements. The receivers have 0.5V hysteresis for noise immunity and accept input voltages up to ±30V. The CPE suffix denotes the commercial temperature range (0°C to +70°C) in a PDIP-16 through-hole package. For lower-voltage applications, the MAX3232 operates from 3.0V to 5.5V.

The MAX232CPE uses a dual charge-pump voltage converter to generate the ±10V rails needed for RS-232 driver outputs from a single 5V supply. The first charge pump uses capacitor C1 to double the 5V input to approximately +10V, stored on C3 at the V+ pin. The second charge pump uses capacitor C2 to invert the +10V to approximately -10V, stored on C4 at the V- pin. These generated voltages power the RS-232 driver output stages. Each driver is an inverting level shifter: a TTL LOW input (0V) produces an RS-232 HIGH output (+8V typical), and a TTL HIGH input (5V) produces an RS-232 LOW output (-8V typical). The inversion is by design—RS-232 defines a logic 1 (mark) as -3V to -15V and a logic 0 (space) as +3V to +15V, which is the opposite polarity of TTL. Each receiver inverts the RS-232 signal back to TTL levels: an RS-232 input above +2.4V produces a TTL LOW output, and an input below +0.8V produces a TTL HIGH output. The 0.5V hysteresis between these thresholds prevents oscillation on slow or noisy input edges. Internal 400kΩ pull-up resistors on the driver inputs ensure that unused drivers output an RS-232 LOW (mark) state, which is the idle condition for serial communication.
