The LTC3630EMSE#TRPBF from Analog Devices is a high-efficiency synchronous step-down DC-DC converter that operates from a 4V to 65V input and delivers up to 500mA output current. The device features ultra-low 12uA quiescent current in Burst Mode operation, making it ideal for always-on battery-powered systems where standby power consumption is critical. The output voltage can be pin-selected to 1.8V, 3.3V, or 5V without external resistors, or adjusted from 0.8V to VIN using a resistor divider. The internal synchronous rectifier eliminates the need for an external Schottky diode, reducing component count and board space. The switching frequency is adjustable from 100kHz to 500kHz via an external resistor, allowing optimization of efficiency and component size.

The LTC3630EMSE#TRPBF uses a current-mode synchronous buck converter topology with Burst Mode for light-load efficiency. (1) Power Stage: Internal high-side and low-side N-channel MOSFET switches form a synchronous buck converter. During the on-time, the high-side switch connects the inductor to VIN, increasing inductor current. During the off-time, the low-side synchronous switch provides a low-resistance path for inductor current, improving efficiency compared to a diode. (2) Current-Mode Control: An internal current sense circuit monitors the peak inductor current each switching cycle, providing cycle-by-cycle current limiting and fast transient response. The error amplifier compares the feedback voltage to the 0.8V reference and adjusts the peak current threshold. (3) Burst Mode: At light loads, the converter enters Burst Mode where it delivers energy in bursts followed by a sleep period, reducing the effective switching frequency and quiescent current to 12uA. (4) RUN Pin: The precise RUN pin threshold (1.21V) allows programmable input undervoltage lockout with a resistor divider.
