The LSF0108PWR from Texas Instruments is an 8-channel bidirectional multi-voltage level translator that automatically senses signal direction without requiring a direction (DIR) control pin, greatly simplifying system design for buses like I2C, SMBus, and PMBus where both master and slave can drive the same line. The device supports voltage translation between a wide range of voltage domains on the A-side (0.95V to 4.5V) and B-side (1.8V to 5.5V), including common pairs such as 1.8V-to-3.3V, 2.5V-to-3.3V, and 3.3V-to-5V. Each of the 8 channels can be configured with different translation levels independently, providing exceptional flexibility for multi-voltage system designs. The LSF0108 supports both open-drain (for I2C/SMBus) and push-pull (for SPI/UART) signal types. At capacitive loads of 30pF, up-translation supports 100MHz and down-translation exceeds 100MHz, enabling use with high-speed interfaces like SDIO and MDIO. The 5V-tolerant I/O pins are compatible with TTL levels found in industrial and telecom applications. The enable (EN) pin provides a low-power standby mode with high-impedance I/O pins when disabled. The flow-through pinout (A pins on one side, B pins on the other) simplifies PCB routing by allowing clean signal traces between voltage domains. The device is available in a 20-pin TSSOP package specified from -40 to +125C.

The LSF0108PWR operates as a passive bidirectional voltage translator using auto-sensing pass-gate architecture. Key subsystems include: (1) Pass-Gate Architecture – each channel consists of an N-channel MOSFET pass transistor connecting the A-side and B-side I/O pins; the gate of each pass transistor is biased to a voltage determined by the VREF_A and VREF_B reference inputs, typically connected to VCCA and VCCB respectively; this sets the pass transistor threshold to allow conduction when either side drives the signal; (2) Auto-Direction Sensing – when the A-side driver pulls a line low, the pass gate conducts and the B-side follows; when the B-side driver pulls low, the same conduction occurs in reverse; no direction control is needed because the pass gate conducts in both directions; for open-drain buses, external pull-up resistors on both sides restore the high level after the driver releases; (3) Voltage Translation – when one side drives low, the pass gate conducts and the other side is pulled to the low level (plus a small Ron drop); when neither side drives, the pull-up resistors on each side pull the line to that side’s supply voltage; this creates the voltage translation; (4) Reference Biasing – the VREF_A and VREF_B pins set the gate bias voltage; the gate is biased to VREF_A + Vth (approximately) ensuring the pass transistor is on when both sides are high and off when EN is low; (5) Enable Control – when EN is low, all pass gates are turned off, presenting high impedance on all I/O pins; this allows the device to be disabled for hot-insertion or power sequencing.
