The LM7805MP from TI is a fixed 5V, 1.5A positive linear voltage regulator in SOT-223. Accepts 7-35V input with 2V typical dropout at 1A. Features internal thermal shutdown at 150C, overcurrent protection, and short-circuit protection. 3% output voltage accuracy with 62dB PSRR at 120Hz. MP suffix denotes SOT-223 tape-and-reel. Industry-standard 5V regulator for logic and MCU power supply.

The LM7805 uses a series-pass NPN transistor controlled by an error amplifier that compares a fraction of the output voltage (via an internal resistor divider) against an internal bandgap reference (~5V). When the output voltage drops below 5V, the error amplifier increases base drive to the pass transistor, raising the output. When the output exceeds 5V, base drive is reduced. The thermal shutdown circuit monitors junction temperature and disables the pass transistor above 150C. The current limiting circuit senses the output current and limits it to a safe value during overload or short-circuit conditions. The 2V dropout voltage is the minimum VCE(sat) of the NPN pass transistor.
