The LM386MX-1/NOPB from Texas Instruments is the surface-mount version of the legendary LM386 low-voltage audio power amplifier in an 8-pin SOIC package. The MX-1 version specifies 4V to 12V supply range and 325mW output into 8Ohm at 12V supply. The /NOPB suffix indicates lead-free (Pb-free) packaging. Since its introduction by National Semiconductor in the 1970s, the LM386 has become the most widely used small audio amplifier IC, found in everything from guitar pedals to educational kits. The gain is internally set to 20 (26dB) with no external components, but can be increased to any value from 20 to 200 (46dB) by adding a resistor and capacitor between pins 1 and 8. The ground-referenced input eliminates the need for input coupling capacitors in many applications, while the self-centering output biases to VCC/2 automatically.
The LM386 operates through four subsystems: (1) Differential Input Stage: A PNP differential pair provides ground-referenced inputs (both inputs referenced to ground). The input impedance is approximately 50kOhm. The negative input is typically used for feedback, while the positive input receives the audio signal. (2) Gain Setting: The default voltage gain of 20 is set by internal resistors. The gain can be increased by bypassing the internal 1.35kOhm emitter resistor between pins 1 and 8 with an external capacitor (gain increases to 200 when only the capacitor is used) or with a resistor-capacitor series combination (gain set between 20 and 200). (3) Power Output Stage: A Class AB push-pull output stage automatically biases to VCC/2. The output can drive loads as low as 4Ohm, delivering up to 325mW at VS=12V into 8Ohm. The output is AC-coupled to the speaker through a 250uF capacitor. (4) Bypass and Zobel Network: Pin 7 provides a bypass for the internal midpoint reference. A 10uF capacitor from pin 7 to ground improves PSRR and reduces power supply noise on the output. A Zobel network (0.05uF + 10Ohm in series) from the output to ground prevents high-frequency oscillation.
