The LM358AM from Texas Instruments is one of the most widely used dual operational amplifiers in the electronics industry. As a member of the LM358 family, it provides two independent, high-gain, internally compensated op-amps in a single SOIC-8 package. Its key advantage is single-supply operation from 3V to 32V, with the common-mode input range including ground, eliminating the need for a negative supply in many applications. The low supply current of 0.7mA for both amplifiers makes it ideal for battery-powered and low-power designs. The internal compensation ensures stability without external components in unity-gain configurations.

The LM358AM uses a classic two-stage op-amp architecture with an input differential pair, gain stage, and output buffer. The input stage uses PNP transistors in a differential configuration, allowing the common-mode input range to extend down to ground (0V) in single-supply operation. The gain stage provides the high open-loop gain (approximately 100dB), while the internal compensation capacitor ensures stability with 100% feedback (unity gain). The output stage uses a class AB push-pull configuration that can both source and sink current, though the sinking capability is limited compared to sourcing. The output can swing to within approximately 1.5V of the positive supply rail and to ground in single-supply operation, making it suitable for DC-coupled applications.
