The LM337IMP is an adjustable 3-terminal negative voltage regulator from Texas Instruments, providing output voltages from -1.2V to -37V at up to 1A load current in the SOT-223-4 surface-mount package. It is the negative complement to the LM317 positive regulator, and together they can form a complete split-rail power supply. The device requires only two external resistors to program the output voltage. Internal protection includes current limiting, thermal shutdown, and safe-area compensation, making the device essentially indestructible under normal operating conditions. Note: This specific part number (LM337IMP) is obsolete; the replacement is LM337IMP/NOPB.

The LM337IMP maintains a constant -1.25V reference between the output (VOUT) and adjustment (ADJ) pins. An external resistor R1 connected between VOUT and ADJ establishes a constant current through the voltage divider. A second resistor R2 from ADJ to ground sets the output voltage: VOUT = -1.25V × (1 + R2/R1). The adjustment pin draws a small quiescent current (65µA typical) which contributes a negligible error term. The internal pass transistor regulates by controlling the current flow from input to output, maintaining the desired output voltage despite changes in load current or input voltage. The dropout voltage of approximately 1.9V means the input must be at least 1.9V more negative than the output for proper regulation.
