The LM2931MX-5.0/NOPB is a Texas Instruments 5V fixed low-dropout (LDO) voltage regulator in an 8-pin SOIC package. The 26V maximum input voltage makes it suitable for 12V and 24V automotive and industrial bus rails, while the 0.16V typical dropout voltage at 100mA ensures the 5V output is maintained even when the input drops to 5.16V. The 75uA quiescent current minimizes standby power drain, critical for battery-powered and always-on systems. The LM2931 includes reverse polarity protection that survives -26V at the input without damage, an essential feature for automotive applications where battery reversal during jump-start can destroy unprotected regulators. The output current is internally limited to approximately 300mA for short-circuit protection, and thermal shutdown activates at 165C junction temperature. The MX suffix indicates SOIC-8 tape-and-reel, and the 5.0 suffix indicates 5.0V fixed output. The NOPB suffix indicates Pb-free (lead-free) finish.

The LM2931 uses a PNP pass transistor in a common-emitter configuration, which enables the low 0.16V dropout voltage. Unlike NPN-pass regulators where the dropout exceeds 1.5V, the PNP pass element dropout equals VCE(sat) which can be as low as 0.16V. The error amplifier compares a scaled version of the output voltage against an internal bandgap reference. The reverse polarity protection uses an internal diode and current limiting to prevent damage when VIN goes negative. The 75uA quiescent current is the bias current for the error amplifier, bandgap reference, and protection circuits. The internal current limit of 300mA protects against output shorts. The thermal shutdown circuit monitors junction temperature and shuts off the pass transistor above 165C.
