The LM2596S-3.3 is a fixed 3.3V output version of TI’s SIMPLE SWITCHER step-down regulator family in TO-263-5 package. Operating from 4.5V to 40V input, it delivers up to 3A at 150kHz with only four external components required. Internal frequency compensation eliminates external compensation networks. The ON/OFF pin enables shutdown with 50uA standby current. Thermal shutdown and current limiting protect against faults. The LM2596S-3.3 is one of the most widely used buck regulators for generating 3.3V from 5V, 12V, or 24V sources.

The LM2596S-3.3 operates as a fixed-frequency (150kHz), current-mode buck converter. The internal NPN Darlington power switch connects VIN to the inductor when ON. When OFF, the external Schottky catch diode conducts, allowing inductor current to freewheel. The output voltage is compared to an internal 1.23V reference via a built-in resistor divider. Current-mode control provides fast transient response and inherent current limiting. The ON/OFF pin disables the oscillator when pulled below 1.3V.
