The LM2576S-5.0 is a fixed 5V output version of the SIMPLE SWITCHER family from Texas Instruments, providing a complete 3A step-down switching regulator requiring only 4 external components. The fixed 5V output eliminates the need for an external resistor divider, simplifying the design. The device operates from 7V to 40V input with 52kHz fixed switching frequency. Internal features include cycle-by-cycle current limiting, thermal shutdown, and output transistor safe-area compensation. The TTL-compatible ON/OFF pin allows shutdown with only 50µA standby current. The surface-mount TO-263-5 (D2PAK) package is ideal for automated PCB assembly.

The LM2576S-5.0 uses a fixed-frequency voltage-mode PWM control scheme identical to the adjustable version but with an internal resistor divider that sets the output to 5V. The FB pin is internally connected to the junction of two precision resistors that divide the 5V output down to the 1.23V reference level. When the output voltage is above the setpoint, the error amplifier reduces the switch duty cycle, decreasing the output voltage. When below the setpoint, the duty cycle increases. The internal NPN Darlington switch handles up to 3A output current with a saturation voltage of approximately 1.5V at full load. The external catch diode (Schottky recommended for efficiency) provides a current path during the switch off-time. Under overload conditions, cycle-by-cycle current limiting caps the peak switch current at approximately 4.5A. Under short-circuit conditions, the switching frequency drops to approximately 11kHz to prevent inductor saturation. The thermal shutdown activates at approximately 170°C junction temperature.
