The LM224N is a quad operational amplifier from Texas Instruments qualified for military temperature range operation from -25°C to +85°C. It consists of four independent, high-gain, internally compensated operational amplifiers designed to operate from a single supply over a wide range of 3 V to 32 V, or from dual supplies of +/-1.5 V to +/-16 V. Each amplifier features true differential inputs with a common-mode voltage range that includes ground, enabling true single-supply operation without external biasing. The output voltage can swing to ground while operating from a single positive supply. The total supply current for all four amplifiers is only 700 µA at 5 V and is essentially independent of the supply voltage magnitude. With 1.2 MHz gain bandwidth, 0.5 V/µs slew rate, and 100 dB large-signal voltage gain, the LM224N is suitable for a wide range of general-purpose amplification, filtering, and signal conditioning tasks. The PDIP-14 through-hole package enables easy prototyping and field service.

The LM224N uses a PNP input stage that allows the input common-mode voltage range to extend to ground (0 V) in single-supply operation. The PNP input transistors draw bias current out of the input pins (nominally 45 nA), which flows through external source resistance. Each amplifier consists of a differential input stage, a high-gain intermediate stage, and a Class AB output stage capable of sourcing 20 mA and sinking 10 mA. Internal compensation capacitors provide unity-gain stability without external components. The output stage includes active current limiting and can drive capacitive loads directly. In single-supply operation, the output transistor can pull down to within a few millivolts of ground, but cannot pull all the way to V+. The 1.2 MHz gain bandwidth product and 0.5 V/µs slew rate are set by the internal compensation capacitor and the input stage tail current, respectively.
