The L78L08ACZ is a 100mA positive linear voltage regulator from STMicroelectronics providing a fixed 8V output in a TO-92 through-hole package. The A-grade offers ±2% output voltage tolerance at 25°C over the -40°C to +125°C industrial temperature range. It requires only input and output bypass capacitors for operation. Internal protection includes thermal shutdown at 150°C and short-circuit current limiting at approximately 200mA. The 8V output is commonly used for dual-supply op-amp circuits (±8V) and specialized analog applications. The TO-92 package is ideal for low-power applications and prototyping.

The L78L08ACZ uses a series pass transistor controlled by an error amplifier that compares a fraction of the output voltage (via an internal resistor divider set for 8V) with an internal bandgap reference. The error amplifier drives the base of the NPN pass transistor to maintain the output at 8V. The series pass element dissipates (VIN – VOUT) × ILOAD as heat, requiring adequate PCB copper or heatsinking at higher input-output differentials. The thermal shutdown circuit monitors junction temperature and turns off the pass transistor at approximately 150°C. The current-limiting circuit senses output current and reduces the drive when it exceeds approximately 200mA. Safe area protection reduces the current limit as the input-output voltage differential increases. The 45dB ripple rejection at 120Hz suppresses input ripple by a factor of approximately 178:1. The 3mA quiescent current flows through the internal bias network and is delivered to the output rather than wasted.

L78L08ACZ pin assignment (TO-92-3, flat face toward you, pins down): Pin 1 (left) = OUTPUT, Pin 2 (center) = GND, Pin 3 (right) = INPUT. WARNING: 78Lxx has OUTPUT on Pin 1 and INPUT on Pin 3, which is OPPOSITE to the larger 78xx TO-220 where Input is Pin 1. This is a common source of design errors. Always verify pinout against the specific datasheet before PCB layout. The A suffix denotes ±4% tolerance; C suffix = ±8%.
