The STMicroelectronics L78L06ABZ is a three-terminal positive voltage regulator from the L78L series providing a fixed 6V output at up to 100 mA in a compact TO-92 through-hole package. The device employs internal current limiting and thermal shutdown, making it essentially indestructible under normal operating conditions. It requires no external components for operation, offering a simpler and more reliable alternative to Zener diode/resistor combinations with lower quiescent current and lower output noise. The A grade designation ensures +/-4% output voltage tolerance over the full -40°C to +125°C operating temperature range.

The L78L06ABZ operates as a series-pass linear regulator using an internal NPN pass transistor controlled by a feedback loop. A resistive divider samples the output voltage and compares it against an internal bandgap reference. The error amplifier adjusts the pass transistor drive to maintain the output at the regulated 6V. The dropout voltage of 1.7V represents the minimum input-output differential required for regulation, meaning the input must be at least 7.7V to maintain a regulated 6V output. Internal current limiting protects the device from output short circuits by reducing the pass transistor drive when current exceeds approximately 100 mA. Thermal shutdown activates when the junction temperature exceeds the safe limit, disabling the output until the temperature drops below the hysteresis threshold.
