The L7805ACV-DG is a three-terminal positive voltage regulator from STMicroelectronics’ L78xxAC series, providing a fixed 5 V output at up to 1.5 A. The A-version guarantees 2% output voltage tolerance over the extended temperature range. Internal current limiting, thermal shutdown, and safe operating area protection make the device essentially indestructible under normal operating conditions. The Dual Gauge TO-220 package accommodates both standard and fine-pitch PCB layouts, enhancing manufacturing flexibility. Although designed primarily as a fixed voltage regulator, external components can be added to achieve adjustable output voltages and currents.

The L7805ACV-DG uses a series-pass regulator topology with three main functional blocks. (1) Reference and Error Amplifier: A bandgap voltage reference generates a precise internal reference voltage, compared against a resistive divider sample of the output voltage. The error amplifier drives the pass transistor to maintain the output at 5 V regardless of input or load variations. (2) Pass Transistor and Driver: A Darlington-connected NPN pass transistor in series with the input delivers load current up to 1.5 A with a typical dropout of 2 V. The driver stage ensures adequate base current under all load conditions. (3) Protection Circuits: Current limiting activates when output current exceeds approximately 2.2 A, protecting against short circuits. A thermal shutdown circuit disables the pass transistor when junction temperature exceeds approximately 150°C. Safe operating area protection limits the pass transistor power dissipation during combined high-voltage and high-current conditions.
