The KSZ8863RLLI-TR is Microchip Technology’s highly integrated 3-port 10/100 managed Ethernet switch from the KSZ8863 family. It combines two 10/100Base-TX MAC/PHY transceivers with integrated magnetics-free copper PHYs and one 10/100/1000 RGMII/MII/RMII MAC-only host port, providing a complete single-chip Ethernet switching solution. The switch fabric supports non-blocking wire-speed forwarding with a 1K MAC address table and 128KB shared frame buffer. Advanced managed features include 4-queue QoS with 802.1p/DSCP classification, 802.1Q VLAN, IGMP snooping, and comprehensive MIB/RMON statistics. Configuration is supported via SPI, MIIM (MDC/MDIO), or I2C interfaces. The RGMII host port enables direct connection to processors running at up to 1000Mbps, making it ideal for embedded industrial networking applications.

Switching Fabric

The KSZ8863 employs a store-and-forward switching architecture with a 128KB shared SRAM frame buffer. Incoming frames are fully received and validated (FCS check) before being forwarded to the destination port(s). The 1K MAC address table is automatically populated through source address learning, with entries aged out after a configurable timeout. Broadcast, multicast, and unknown unicast frames are flooded to all ports within the same VLAN.

PHY Transceivers

The two copper PHYs implement IEEE 802.3 10Base-T and 100Base-TX with auto-negotiation, auto-MDIX crossover detection, and energy-detect power-down. The PHYs include integrated line-side termination, eliminating the need for external magnetics in some PCB layouts. Each PHY supports half and full duplex operation at both 10Mbps and 100Mbps.

Host MAC Interface

The third port provides a MAC-only interface supporting RGMII (10/100/1000Mbps), MII (10/100Mbps), and RMII (10/100Mbps) modes, configurable via strap pins or management registers. This port connects directly to an external processor or SoC, enabling the switch to serve as a multi-port Ethernet expansion for embedded systems.

QoS and Traffic Management

Each port supports 4 traffic queues with strict priority scheduling. Frames are classified into queues based on 802.1p priority tags, IPv4 DSCP values, or port-based default priority. This ensures latency-sensitive traffic (e.g., industrial control, VoIP) receives preferential treatment over best-effort data.
