The IR333-A from Everlight Electronics is a high-intensity 940nm infrared emitting diode in a 5mm (T 1-3/4) radial through-hole package with blue epoxy lens. The GaAlAs LED chip provides 20mW/sr typical radiant intensity at 20mA forward current, with 750mW/sr available in pulsed mode (1A, tp<100us, 1% duty). The 1.5V typical forward voltage is compatible with single-cell battery operation. The 20-degree narrow viewing angle concentrates IR emission for directed transmission. The device is spectrally matched with Everlight phototransistors and photodiodes such as the PT334-6C.

The IR333-A operates as a GaAlAs infrared emitting diode. (1) The GaAlAs (Gallium Aluminum Arsenide) double-heterojunction LED chip emits infrared radiation at 940nm peak wavelength when forward biased. The forward current injects electrons into the active region where they recombine with holes, releasing photons at 940nm wavelength. The 45nm spectral bandwidth provides a relatively narrow emission spectrum centered on 940nm. (2) The blue epoxy lens provides directional emission with a 20-degree half-angle viewing cone, concentrating the IR energy for longer transmission range compared to wide-angle emitters. The radiant intensity of 20mW/sr at 20mA indicates high emission efficiency. In pulsed mode at 1A, the intensity increases to 750mW/sr for high-power burst transmission. (3) The forward voltage of 1.5V typical at 20mA allows operation from a single Li-ion cell (3.0-4.2V) with a simple series resistor. The 100mA maximum continuous current and 150mW power dissipation define the DC operating limits, while the 1A peak current specification supports high-power IR burst applications.
