The Broadcom HCPL-316J-500E is a highly integrated gate drive optocoupler that combines an AlGaAs LED with an integrated photodetector and gate driver IC in a single optically isolated package. Designed specifically for driving IGBTs and power MOSFETs, it provides 2.5A peak output current with 5000Vrms galvanic isolation between input and output. The device features under-voltage lock-out (UVLO) that disables the gate drive output when the supply voltage drops below the threshold, preventing IGBT operation in the linear region. The active Miller clamp eliminates the need for a negative gate drive supply by clamping the gate voltage during high dv/dt switching transients. Desaturation detection monitors the IGBT collector-emitter voltage and generates a fault output when overcurrent conditions are detected, providing comprehensive IGBT protection.

The HCPL-316J-500E operates by converting an LED input signal to an isolated gate drive output through optical coupling. When the input LED is driven (IF > threshold), the photodetector IC activates the output driver, which sources or sinks up to 2.5A peak current to charge/discharge the IGBT gate capacitance. The UVLO circuit monitors VCC2 and disables the output when the supply drops below 10V, ensuring the IGBT is never driven with insufficient gate voltage. The desaturation detection circuit monitors the IGBT VCE through the DESAT pin; when VCE exceeds the threshold during on-state, a fault is detected and the output is slowly shut down to avoid voltage spikes. The Miller clamp activates when the output goes low, providing a low-impedance path from gate to emitter to prevent parasitic turn-on caused by Miller capacitance current during high dv/dt collector voltage transitions.
