The Broadcom HCPL-0630-500E is a dual-channel high-speed digital optocoupler that provides electrical isolation of 3750Vrms while transmitting digital signals at data rates up to 15MBd. Each channel consists of a GaAsP LED optically coupled to a PIN photodiode and high-gain amplifier driving an open-collector output transistor. The 45ns maximum propagation delay makes it suitable for high-speed bus and interface isolation applications. The dual-channel configuration in a 16-lead SOIC package provides two isolated channels in the board space of a single wide-body SOIC, reducing cost and board area compared to two single-channel devices. The 500E suffix specifies tape and reel packaging for automated SMT assembly.

The HCPL-0630-500E uses optical coupling to transmit digital signals across an isolation barrier. When the input LED is forward biased (IF ≈ 10mA), it emits infrared light at approximately 660nm wavelength. This light passes through the transparent isolation dielectric and illuminates the PIN photodiode on the output side. The photodiode converts the optical signal back to a photocurrent, which is amplified by the high-gain transimpedance amplifier and drives the open-collector output transistor. When the LED is off, no light reaches the photodiode and the output transistor is off, allowing the output to be pulled high by an external pull-up resistor. The internal shield between input and output provides 15kV/μs common mode rejection, ensuring reliable operation in high-noise environments such as motor drive circuits.
