The FSMD050-2920-R is a Bourns polymer positive temperature coefficient (PTC) resettable fuse in a 2920 (7565 metric) surface-mount package. The device holds 500mA without tripping and trips at 1A, providing overcurrent protection for circuits operating at up to 15V. Unlike single-use fuses, the PTC resets automatically when the overcurrent condition is removed and the device cools, eliminating replacement costs. The initial resistance of 0.05 to 0.25Ω minimizes voltage drop at normal operating currents. When an overcurrent exceeds the trip threshold, the polymer matrix heats and expands, increasing resistance by several orders of magnitude and limiting current to a low leakage level. Once the fault clears and power is removed, the PTC cools and the polymer contracts, restoring low resistance. The FSMD series is designed for applications where manual fuse replacement is impractical, such as sealed enclosures, battery packs, and remote equipment.

The PTC resettable fuse consists of a polymer matrix loaded with conductive carbon particles. At normal temperatures, the carbon particles form conductive chains through the polymer, providing low resistance (0.05-0.25Ω). When current exceeds the trip threshold, I²R heating raises the polymer temperature above its glass transition point. The polymer expands, breaking the conductive carbon chains and increasing resistance by 2-3 orders of magnitude. This high-resistance state limits the current to a small leakage level, protecting the circuit. The trip time depends on the overcurrent magnitude: higher overcurrents trip faster (typically <1 second at 5x Ihold). When the fault is removed and power is cycled, the polymer cools and contracts, re-establishing the conductive paths and restoring low resistance. Note that the reset resistance may be slightly higher than the initial value after multiple trip cycles.
