The tuning fork crystal uses a X-cut quartz element vibrating at 32.768kHz (2^15 Hz) in a flexural mode. When placed in the feedback path of a CMOS inverter oscillator circuit with appropriate load capacitance, the piezoelectric effect sustains precise oscillation. The 32.768kHz frequency divided by 2^15 produces exactly 1Hz for real-time clock counting.
