The DS90LV031ATMX from Texas Instruments is a quad CMOS differential line driver designed for applications requiring ultra-low power dissipation and high data rates using Low Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS) technology. The device accepts LVTTL/LVCMOS input levels and translates them to low-voltage (350mV typical) differential output signals compliant with the TIA/EIA-644 LVDS standard. Data rates in excess of 400 Mbps are supported. The current-mode driver design provides constant 3.5 mA output current that develops 350 mV across a 100-ohm termination resistor at the receiver. The output offset voltage of 1.2V centers the signal within the receiver common-mode range. EN and EN* pins provide tri-state control for bus sharing and ultra-low idle power of 13 mW typical. The DS90LV031A paired with the DS90LV032A receiver provides a complete LVDS communication solution consuming 80% less power than PECL alternatives.

The DS90LV031ATMX uses a current-mode driver architecture where a controlled 3.5 mA current source is steered through the differential output pair. When the input is HIGH, current flows from the Y output through the 100-ohm termination resistor to the Z output, creating a positive differential voltage. When the input is LOW, the current direction reverses, creating a negative differential voltage. This current-mode approach provides several advantages: the 350 mV swing is relatively constant regardless of load impedance variations, the quiescent current remains flat versus switching frequency (unlike RS-422 voltage-mode drivers), and the low swing minimizes EMI and power dissipation. The output is centered at 1.2V offset from ground, within the 0V to 2.4V LVDS receiver common-mode range. The tri-state function disconnects the current source, reducing supply current to the 3.5 mA idle state. The 2ns propagation delay and 0.5ns transition times enable the 400 Mbps data rate.
