The Texas Instruments DRV8835DSSR is a compact dual H-bridge motor driver designed for low-voltage and battery-powered motion control applications. It provides two independent H-bridges, each capable of driving up to 1.5A continuous current, suitable for driving two brushed DC motors or a single stepper motor. The device features two control interface modes selectable via the MODE pin: IN/IN mode provides individual control of each half-bridge output, while PHASE/ENABLE mode uses direction and enable inputs for simpler motor direction control. The low 305 mOhm MOSFET RDS(ON) minimizes power dissipation and voltage drop, critical for battery-powered applications. The 10 nA sleep current extends battery life in standby modes. Internal protection circuits include overcurrent protection (OCP), short-circuit protection, undervoltage lockout (UVLO), and thermal shutdown (TSD). The 3×2 mm WSON package with exposed thermal pad provides efficient heat dissipation in space-constrained designs.

The DRV8835DSSR consists of two independent H-bridges, each containing four N-channel MOSFETs configured as a full-bridge. An internal charge pump generates the gate drive voltage above VM for the high-side MOSFETs, eliminating the need for external bootstrap capacitors. In IN/IN mode (MODE=low), each half-bridge output is controlled independently by two input pins (xIN1, xIN2), enabling coast, reverse, forward, and brake operations. In PHASE/ENABLE mode (MODE=high), one input controls the motor direction (xPHASE) and the other enables the bridge (xENABLE), simplifying the interface to a microcontroller. PWM speed control is achieved by pulsing the enable input (PHASE/ENABLE mode) or switching between forward/brake states (IN/IN mode). The overcurrent protection circuit senses the MOSFET current and limits it by regulating the gate voltage; if the overcurrent condition persists beyond the OCP timeout, all MOSFETs are disabled for approximately 1 ms before automatic retry. The two H-bridges can be paralleled for a single 3A motor drive by connecting AOUT1 to BOUT1 and AOUT2 to BOUT2 with corresponding inputs driven in parallel.
