The DRV2605LDGSR from Texas Instruments is a highly integrated haptic driver designed for both ERM (eccentric rotating mass) and LRA (linear resonant actuator) vibration motors in a VSSOP-10 package. The device features a built-in haptic waveform library with 123 pre-programmed effects including clicks, bumps, dips, pops, and complex patterns, eliminating the need for custom waveform development. For LRA actuators, the DRV2605L implements closed-loop auto-resonance tracking that continuously monitors the actuator’s back-EMF to maintain optimal driving frequency, ensuring maximum vibration amplitude even as the resonant frequency shifts with temperature and aging. The automatic overdrive feature applies higher voltage during actuator startup for faster response, while the active braking feature quickly stops vibration for crisp tactile feedback. I2C interface (up to 400kHz) provides simple register-based control with real-time playback capability. The device operates from 2.0V to 5.2V and consumes only 1.8uA in standby mode, making it ideal for battery-powered portable devices.

The DRV2605LDGSR drives haptic actuators using pre-programmed waveforms with closed-loop feedback. (1) Waveform Library: 123 haptic effects are stored in on-chip ROM. Each effect defines the drive waveform amplitude envelope over time. The I2C interface selects and triggers playback of any library effect. (2) ERM Mode: For eccentric rotating mass motors, the DRV2605L drives a PWM signal through an H-bridge output stage. Automatic overdrive applies higher PWM duty cycle during motor startup to reduce response time. Active braking reverses the H-bridge polarity to quickly decelerate the motor, producing crisp haptic effects. (3) LRA Mode: For linear resonant actuators, the device drives a sinusoidal-like AC signal at the actuator’s resonant frequency. Auto-resonance tracking monitors the back-EMF of the LRA during the off portion of each drive cycle. The DSP calculates the phase difference between the drive signal and the back-EMF, adjusting the drive frequency to maintain resonance. (4) Closed Loop: For both actuator types, the back-EMF feedback enables detection of actuator faults (open/short) and ensures consistent haptic performance across manufacturing variations and operating conditions.
