The DAC7571IDBVR from Texas Instruments is a low-power, 12-bit, single-channel voltage-output digital-to-analog converter in a tiny SOT-23-6 package. It features a rail-to-rail output amplifier that allows the output to swing from 0V to the supply voltage, maximizing dynamic range. The device operates from a single 2.7V to 5.5V supply and consumes only 0.5mW at 3V, making it ideal for battery-powered applications. Communication is via a standard I2C interface supporting standard (100kHz), fast (400kHz), and high-speed (3.4MHz) modes. The DAC7571 includes a power-on-reset circuit that ensures the output starts at zero-scale upon power-up. The device provides guaranteed monotonicity over the full operating temperature range with INL of +-4 LSB and DNL of +-0.75 LSB.

The DAC7571IDBVR operates through three main subsystems: (1) Digital interface – The I2C slave interface receives 16-bit data words containing a 12-bit DAC value. The interface supports standard, fast, and high-speed I2C modes up to 3.4MHz. The device address is configurable via the A0 pin, allowing two DAC7571 devices on the same I2C bus. (2) DAC core – The 12-bit digital code is converted to an analog voltage using an R-2R resistor ladder architecture. The resistor string is fabricated with precision thin-film technology ensuring 12-bit monotonicity. The output voltage is proportional to the digital code: VOUT = VDD x (D/4096), where D is the 12-bit digital input value. (3) Output amplifier – A rail-to-rail CMOS output buffer amplifier drives the DAC output. It can source and sink current while maintaining the output voltage within millivolts of the supply rails. The amplifier settles to 0.5 LSB within 10us for a full-scale step. The power-on-reset circuit forces the DAC register to zero on power-up, ensuring a known output state.
