The CD4520BE from Texas Instruments is a CMOS dual 4-bit binary up-counter in a PDIP-16 package. Each of the two independent counters consists of four flip-flops counting from 0 to 15 in binary sequence. Each counter has a clock input (CL), clock enable (EN), and master reset (MR). Counting occurs on the rising edge of CL when EN is high, or on the falling edge of EN when CL is low, providing flexible clocking options. The asynchronous MR input resets all four flip-flops to zero. The two counters can be cascaded by connecting the Q3 output of one to the clock input of the next, forming an 8-bit counter. The wide 3V to 18V supply range and -55C to +125C operating range make it suitable for harsh environments.

The CD4520BE contains two independent 4-bit synchronous binary counters. (1) Counter Stage: Each counter consists of four T-type flip-flops connected as a ripple counter. On each clock edge, the least significant bit toggles. Each subsequent bit toggles when all lower bits are high (carry propagation). (2) Clock/Enable: The CL pin is a rising-edge-triggered clock when EN is high. Alternatively, EN can be used as a falling-edge clock when CL is low. This provides flexibility for positive or negative edge triggering. (3) Master Reset: The MR pin asynchronously resets all flip-flops to zero regardless of clock or enable states. (4) Cascade: For multi-stage counting, Q3 of counter 1 connects to CL of counter 2. When counter 1 overflows (15 to 0), the falling edge of Q3 clocks counter 2. Each counter provides Q0-Q3 outputs and a carry output from Q3.
