The CC2520RHDT from Texas Instruments is a 2.4GHz IEEE 802.15.4 RF transceiver in a QFN-28 (5x5mm) package. The device provides a complete radio front-end with +5dBm maximum output power and -98dBm receiver sensitivity, yielding a 103dB link budget for reliable wireless communication. The hardware AES-128 encryption accelerator offloads security processing from the host MCU. Frame handling features include auto-ACK generation, auto-CRC insertion and checking, and frame filtering. The device communicates with the host MCU via SPI at up to 10MHz. Operating from 1.8V to 3.8V, the CC2520 draws 25.8mA in TX mode at +5dBm and 18.5mA in RX mode. It is designed for ZigBee and IEEE 802.15.4 wireless sensor network applications.

The CC2520RHDT implements a complete IEEE 802.15.4 radio transceiver. (1) Transmitter: The O-QPSK modulated baseband signal is upconverted to 2.4GHz by a direct-conversion modulator. The PA amplifies the signal to +5dBm maximum. (2) Receiver: The LNA amplifies the incoming 2.4GHz signal, which is downconverted to a low-IF by a direct-conversion receiver. The baseband processor performs channel filtering, demodulation, and symbol detection. (3) Frame Handler: Hardware automatically adds CRC to transmitted frames and verifies CRC on received frames. Auto-ACK generates acknowledgment frames without MCU intervention. Frame filtering rejects frames not addressed to the node. (4) AES-128: The hardware encryption engine performs AES-128 encryption and decryption for ZigBee network security, processing one 16-byte block per 22us. (5) SPI: The host MCU writes configuration registers and reads/writes FIFO data via SPI at up to 10MHz.
