The CAT24C512WI-GT3 from onsemi is a 512-Kb serial I2C EEPROM internally organized as 65,536 words of 8 bits each. The device supports Standard (100kHz), Fast (400kHz), and Fast-Plus (1MHz) I2C protocols for flexible system integration. The 128-byte page write buffer enables efficient writing of large data blocks. On-chip ECC (Error Correction Code) provides single-bit error correction, making the device suitable for high-reliability applications where data integrity is critical. The hardware write protect (WP) pin protects the entire memory array when driven high. Schmitt trigger inputs and noise suppression filters on the SCL and SDA pins provide robust noise immunity in electrically harsh environments. Three address pins (A0, A1, A2) allow up to eight CAT24C512 devices to share the same I2C bus. The device features 1 million program/erase cycle endurance and 100-year data retention.

The CAT24C512WI-GT3 is a serial I2C EEPROM using floating-gate NMOS technology. (1) I2C Interface: The device communicates via a 2-wire I2C bus. The master initiates communication by sending a start condition followed by the 7-bit device address (1010xxx) and read/write bit. The 17-bit word address (A16-A0) specifies the memory location. (2) Write Operation: In page write mode, up to 128 bytes can be written in a single operation. Data is first written to the page buffer, then the internal write cycle programs the non-volatile memory cells within 5ms. The ECC engine calculates and stores error correction bits alongside each data word. (3) Read Operation: Sequential read mode allows reading the entire 512Kbit memory in a continuous stream by sending ACK after each byte. The access time is 400ns maximum at 1MHz. (4) ECC: The on-chip ECC engine corrects single-bit errors during read operations, significantly improving data reliability over the device lifetime. (5) Write Protect: When WP is high, all write operations are inhibited, protecting the entire memory from accidental modification.
