The CA3140AMZ96 is a Harris (now Renesas/Intersil) BiMOS operational amplifier combining a PMOS input stage with a CMOS output stage in an 8-pin SOIC package. The BiMOS architecture achieves the best of both worlds: the PMOS input provides 10pA input bias current and input common-mode range to the negative rail, while the CMOS output swings to within millivolts of both supply rails. The 4.5MHz gain-bandwidth product and 12V/us slew rate are significantly better than typical CMOS op amps at this bias current level, thanks to the bipolar driver stage between the PMOS input and CMOS output. The 4V to 36V supply range supports operation from single 5V to split 15V rails. The MZ96 suffix indicates military temperature range (-55C to +125C) and tape-and-reel packaging. The CA3140 is a classic industry-standard part widely used in military and aerospace applications for over 40 years.

The CA3140 uses a BiMOS three-stage architecture. The input stage uses a PMOS differential pair that provides 10pA input bias current (MOSFET gate leakage) and input common-mode range extending to the negative supply rail. The PMOS input pair drives a bipolar common-emitter gain stage that provides the high voltage gain (100dB open-loop) and the 4.5MHz GBW when combined with the dominant-pole compensation capacitor. The bipolar intermediate stage also provides the current drive capability for the 12V/us slew rate, which is set by the available current to charge the compensation capacitor. The output stage uses a CMOS push-pull configuration that swings to both supply rails, providing rail-to-rail output swing with low output impedance.
