The BQ29702DSER from Texas Instruments is a cost-effective battery protection IC for single-cell Li-Ion and Li-Polymer battery packs. It provides comprehensive protection including overcharge detection (3.85V to 4.60V in 50mV steps), overdischarge detection (2.00V to 2.80V in 50mV steps), discharge overcurrent (90mV to 200mV in 5mV steps), charge overcurrent, and short-circuit detection (300/400/500/600mV). The device independently controls charge (COUT) and discharge (DOUT) FET gate drives, allowing separate enable/disable of charging and discharging paths. The BQ29702 includes a 0V battery charge inhibit function that prevents charging of deeply discharged cells below 0.75V, enhancing safety. Normal mode current consumption is only 4uA typical, and power-down mode drops below 0.1uA when the cell voltage falls below 1.5V. The tiny 1.5 x 1.5mm WSON package minimizes space in compact battery pack designs.

The BQ29702DSER operates through four main protection subsystems: (1) Overvoltage protection (OVP) – The BAT pin monitors cell voltage continuously. When the cell voltage exceeds the programmed OVP threshold (factory-configured from 3.85V to 4.60V), the COUT output goes low after a programmable delay, turning off the charge FET and stopping further charging. OVP releases when the cell voltage drops below the OVP threshold by the hysteresis voltage (typically 100mV) AND the discharge current exceeds the overcurrent charge release threshold. (2) Undervoltage protection (UVP) – When the cell voltage drops below the programmed UVP threshold (2.00V to 2.80V), the DOUT output goes low, turning off the discharge FET to prevent overdischarge. UVP releases when the cell voltage rises above the UVP threshold plus hysteresis, and a charger is connected (detected via V- pin). (3) Overcurrent protection – The voltage difference between VSS and V- pins (sensed across the discharge FET RDS(ON) or an external sense resistor) is monitored. If this voltage exceeds the OCD or OCC threshold during discharge or charging respectively, the corresponding FET is turned off. (4) Short-circuit protection – If V- voltage indicates a short circuit (voltage exceeding VSCC threshold), both FETs are immediately turned off for maximum safety.
