The BQ24192IRGER from Texas Instruments is a highly integrated I2C-controlled 4.5A switch-mode battery charger for single-cell Li-Ion and Li-Polymer batteries. It features Narrow VDC (NVDC) power path management that allows the system to power on instantly even without a battery or with a deeply discharged battery. The device integrates synchronous buck MOSFETs, current sensing, bootstrap diode, and internal loop compensation for a compact solution. The USB OTG boost converter can deliver 5V at up to 1.3A from the battery, supporting USB peripheral functionality. Charge voltage accuracy of +/-0.5% and current accuracy of +/-7% ensure safe and reliable battery charging.

The BQ24192IRGER operates as a synchronous buck converter for charging and a synchronous boost converter for OTG mode. In charging mode, it steps down the input voltage to the battery voltage using integrated N-channel MOSFETs at 1.5 MHz switching frequency. The NVDC power path regulates the system voltage slightly above the battery voltage but not below a programmable minimum (3.5V), ensuring system operation even with a depleted battery. If the system load exceeds the input source capability, the battery supplements power through the low RDS(on) discharge MOSFET (12 mOhm). Charging follows three phases: pre-conditioning (for deeply discharged cells), constant current (CC), and constant voltage (CV) with automatic termination. The I2C interface provides control over charge voltage, charge current, input current limit, and OTG boost settings.
