The BQ24070RHLR from Texas Instruments is a highly integrated single-chip Li-Ion linear charger and system power-path management device targeted at space-limited portable applications. It features integrated dynamic power-path management (DPPM) that allows the AC adapter to simultaneously power the system and charge the battery. Autonomous power-source selection between the AC adapter and battery ensures uninterrupted system operation. Power supplement mode enables the battery to supplement the AC input current when the system load exceeds the adapter capability. The device supports up to 2A total current with thermal regulation for charge control. Charge status outputs drive LEDs or interface with the system MCU. Comprehensive protection includes reverse current, short-circuit, and thermal shutdown. The system can run with an absent or defective battery pack, enabling instant-on capability from an external power source even with a deeply discharged battery.

The BQ24070RHLR operates as an integrated battery charger and power-path management controller. Key subsystems include: (1) Dynamic Power-Path Management (DPPM) – monitors the system voltage and dynamically adjusts the charge current to maintain the system rail at the regulated voltage (4.4V); when the system load increases, charge current is reduced to maintain system power; (2) Autonomous Power Selection – an internal multiplexer selects between the AC adapter and battery based on adapter presence; when the adapter is removed, the battery seamlessly powers the system; (3) Linear Charger – a precision linear regulator charges the battery with programmable constant current and constant voltage (4.2V) phases; (4) Power Supplement Mode – when the system load exceeds the AC adapter current limit, the battery supplements the system through an internal FET; (5) Thermal Regulation – reduces charge current when the junction temperature approaches the thermal limit, preventing overheating; (6) Protection – reverse current blocking, short-circuit protection, and thermal shutdown protect all power paths.
