The device features 256KB Flash, 32KB SRAM, 6 SERCOM modules (each configurable as USART, SPI, or I2C), full-speed USB 2.0 with embedded host and device, 20-channel 12-bit ADC with programmable gain amplifier and hardware oversampling up to 16-bit effective resolution, 10-bit DAC, 12-channel DMA, and 256-channel capacitive touch sensing. The SleepWalking peripheral architecture allows peripherals to operate in standby mode, waking the CPU only when a condition is met. The AUT suffix denotes 64-pin TQFP package with industrial temperature range and tape and reel.
The ATSAMD21J18A-AUT operates as a low-power Cortex-M0+ microcontroller with flexible peripheral configuration. (1) The Cortex-M0+ core executes instructions at 48MHz with single-cycle hardware multiplier and Micro Trace Buffer (MTB) for debug trace. The internal clock system includes 48MHz DFLL (Digital Frequency Locked Loop) and 48-96MHz FDPLL (Fractional Digital PLL), allowing operation from internal oscillators without external crystals. The SleepWalking architecture enables peripherals to remain partially active in standby mode, triggering interrupts only when specific conditions are met. (2) The 6 SERCOM modules provide extreme flexibility: each can be independently configured as USART (full/half duplex, LIN slave), SPI (up to 30MHz master), or I2C (up to 3.4MHz, SMBus/PMBus). This allows any combination of serial interfaces up to the 6-module limit. The 12-channel DMA controller offloads data transfer between peripherals and memory without CPU intervention. (3) The 12-bit ADC features a programmable gain amplifier (1/2x to 16x) for direct sensor interface without external op-amps, automatic offset and gain error compensation, and hardware oversampling/decimation for 13-16 bit effective resolution. The 10-bit DAC provides analog output capability. The PTC (Peripheral Touch Controller) supports 256 capacitive touch channels with proximity detection, enabling sophisticated touch user interfaces without external touch ICs.
