The ATMEGA640-16AU from Microchip (formerly Atmel) is a high-performance 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller with 64KB of in-system programmable Flash memory, 8KB of SRAM, and 2KB of EEPROM. Running at clock frequencies up to 16MHz, the AVR core executes most instructions in a single clock cycle, delivering up to 16 MIPS throughput. The device features 86 programmable I/O pins in a 100-pin TQFP package, providing ample connectivity for complex embedded applications. The peripheral set includes two 8-bit and two 16-bit timer/counters, 6 PWM channels, a 16-channel 10-bit ADC with 65~260kSPS throughput, dual USARTs for serial communication, an SPI port, and an I2C-compatible TWI port. The JTAG interface supports on-chip debugging and boundary scan, simplifying development and production testing. Power management features include Idle mode (0.5mA), ADC Noise Reduction mode, and Power-save mode (1uA) with RTC operation from a 32kHz watch crystal.

The ATMEGA640-16AU is based on the AVR enhanced RISC architecture, which uses a two-stage pipeline: while one instruction is being executed, the next instruction is being pre-fetched from Flash, enabling single-cycle execution for most instructions. The 32 x 8-bit general-purpose register file is directly connected to the arithmetic logic unit (ALU), allowing independent access in a single clock cycle. The Flash memory is organized as 32K x 16-bit words and supports in-system programming (ISP) via SPI, JTAG, or self-programming from application code. The ADC uses a successive approximation method with sample-and-hold, configurable input multiplexer, and selectable 2.56V internal reference. The USART supports full-duplex asynchronous communication with frame error and parity error detection, as well as master/slave SPI operation. Interrupt vectors are prioritized by hardware, with each peripheral having its own vector address in the program memory.
