The ATmega4809-AU from Microchip Technology is a modern 8-bit AVR microcontroller from the megaAVR 0-series, offering 48KB Flash and 6KB SRAM in a TQFP-48 package. The device introduces advanced features not found in classic AVR devices: an Event System that allows peripherals to communicate directly without CPU intervention, Configurable Custom Logic (CCL) that implements glue logic in hardware, and a Peripheral Touch Controller (PTC) for capacitive sensing without external components. The UPDI (Unified Program and Debug Interface) single-pin programming interface simplifies board design. The 41 I/O pins provide extensive connectivity, while the 12-channel 10-bit ADC supports multi-sensor applications. The 6KB SRAM is significantly larger than classic ATmega devices, enabling more complex algorithms and communication buffers.

The ATmega4809 uses an enhanced AVR 8-bit RISC architecture where most instructions execute in a single clock cycle at 20 MHz. The CPU accesses I/O registers in a single cycle, providing deterministic peripheral control. The Event System is a 6-channel routing network that connects event generators (timer overflows, pin changes, ADC completions) to event users (timer inputs, DMA triggers, CCL inputs) without software intervention, enabling real-time response with zero CPU overhead. The CCL implements programmable combinational and sequential logic (LUTs with optional flip-flops) that can replace external glue logic ICs. The PTC performs capacitive touch sensing by measuring the charge transfer between the sensor pad and an internal sampling capacitor, providing touch detection without external components. The UPDI interface uses a single-wire bidirectional protocol for programming and debugging, replacing the 4-wire ISP interface of classic AVR devices.
