The device supports both 400 kHz and 1 MHz I2C clock rates, enabling fast data access in time-critical systems. The 256-byte page size and self-timed write cycle (5 ms max) allow efficient bulk data updates, while the hardware write-protect pin prevents accidental data corruption. With an endurance of 1,000,000 erase/write cycles and data retention exceeding 40 years, the AT24CM01 provides long-term data integrity for critical configuration storage, calibration tables, and event logging. The cascadable 3-bit address bus supports up to four devices on a single I2C bus, expanding total storage to 4 Mbit without additional address decoding logic. The wide 2.5V to 5.5V supply range supports both 3.3V and 5V system designs, and the 6 uA standby current minimizes battery drain in always-on applications.

The AT24CM01 uses a standard I2C (2-wire) serial interface consisting of SDA (data) and SCL (clock) lines. Communication follows the I2C protocol: the master initiates a start condition, sends the 7-bit device address (1010+A2+A1+A0) followed by a read/write bit, then the 17-bit word address (two bytes for the 128K address space). For write operations, up to 256 bytes can be loaded into the page buffer and written simultaneously during the self-timed 5 ms write cycle. For read operations, the current address read, random read, and sequential read modes are supported. The hardware write-protect (WP) pin, when tied to VCC, blocks write operations to the entire array, protecting critical data from accidental modification. The internal charge pump generates the high voltage needed for EEPROM programming, eliminating the need for external programming voltage.
