The AMS1117-3.3 from Advanced Monolithic Systems is a widely used 1A low-dropout voltage regulator providing a fixed 3.3V output. With a dropout voltage of only 1.1V at 800 mA, it efficiently converts 5V to 3.3V for logic level power supply. The SOT-223 package features a thermal tab for effective heat dissipation, while internal current limiting and thermal shutdown ensure reliable operation. It is an industry-standard LDO found in countless embedded and consumer designs.

The AMS1117-3.3 uses a PNP pass transistor in a common-emitter (LDO) configuration with an internal bandgap reference set to 3.3V. The error amplifier compares the output voltage (sensed via an internal resistor divider) with the reference and adjusts the PNP pass transistor drive to maintain regulation. The low dropout is achieved because the PNP transistor saturation voltage can be very low compared to NPN-based regulators. Internal current limiting senses the pass transistor current and limits it to approximately 1.2A, while thermal shutdown disables the output at approximately 150°C junction temperature.
