The ADM3202ARNZ-REEL7 from Analog Devices is a 3.3V single-supply RS-232 line driver/receiver featuring two drivers and two receivers with +/-12kV HBM ESD protection. The device uses an internal charge pump with four 0.1uF external capacitors to generate the +/-5V output levels required by TIA/EIA-232-E from a single 3.3V supply. The 460kbps data rate supports high-speed serial communication. The 1mA typical supply current is suitable for battery-powered applications. The ARNZ suffix denotes SOIC-20 package and REEL7 indicates 7-inch tape and reel packaging.

The ADM3202ARNZ-REEL7 operates as a dual RS-232 transceiver with integrated charge pump. (1) The internal charge pump uses a voltage doubler and inverter circuit with four external 0.1uF capacitors to generate +5V (V+) and -5V (V-) rails from the 3.3V VCC supply. These generated rails power the RS-232 driver outputs, producing the +/-5V swing required by the RS-232 standard. (2) Each driver converts TTL/CMOS logic levels to RS-232 output levels. The driver output voltage meets the +/-5V minimum required by the EIA-232-E standard, even with 3kOhm load. The 460kbps data rate is achieved through a higher slew rate driver output stage. (3) Each receiver converts RS-232 input levels to TTL/CMOS logic output. The receiver input threshold has built-in hysteresis for noise immunity in noisy industrial environments. The +/-12kV ESD protection on bus pins provides robust protection against electrostatic discharge.
