The AD8497CRMZ-R7 is an Analog Devices precision thermocouple amplifier designed specifically for K-type (Chromel-Alumel) thermocouples. It integrates cold junction compensation and a precalibrated instrumentation amplifier to produce a 5 mV/°C output directly, eliminating the need for external compensation circuitry. The device can operate as a standalone Celsius thermometer or as a setpoint controller. It supports wide supply voltage range (2.7 V to 36 V single supply), features 4.5 kV ESD protection, and input overvoltage protection to VS ± 25 V. The 180 µA typical quiescent current suits battery-powered applications.

The AD8497 operates as a complete thermocouple signal conditioning system with three subsystems: (1) The cold junction compensation circuit integrates a temperature sensor at the reference junction to measure the local temperature and generate a compensating voltage that cancels the thermocouple error voltage at the cold junction. (2) The fixed-gain instrumentation amplifier amplifies the small thermocouple voltage (approximately 41 µV/°C for K-type) to produce a 5 mV/°C output. The high CMRR of the instrumentation amplifier rejects common-mode noise picked up by long thermocouple leads. (3) The reference pin (REF) allows offset adjustment for measuring below 0°C with single supply. The SENSE pin can be connected to the output (measurement mode) or a setpoint voltage (controller mode).
