The AD5290YRMZ10 from Analog Devices is a compact 256-position digital potentiometer with 10 kOhm end-to-end resistance, fabricated in iCMOS (industrial CMOS) process technology. The device supports single-supply operation from +20V to +30V or dual-supply from +/-10V to +/-15V, making it suitable for high-voltage analog applications. The 3-wire SPI-compatible serial interface operates at clock rates up to 4MHz. The temperature coefficient of 35 ppm/C and THD of 0.006% ensure excellent stability and low distortion. The device features a mid-scale wiper preset on power-up and volatile wiper storage. The iCMOS process combines high-voltage CMOS with precision analog capability, enabling the AD5290 to handle analog signals from VSS to VDD (rail-to-rail). The MSOP-10 package provides a compact 3x3mm footprint. The YRMZ10 suffix indicates the MSOP-10 package with 10 kOhm resistance.

The AD5290YRMZ10 operates as a digitally controlled potentiometer using iCMOS technology. (1) Resistor String: The 10 kOhm resistor string consists of 255 equal-value resistive elements connected in series between terminals A and B, creating 256 tap points. CMOS switches connect the wiper terminal W to any one of the 256 tap points. (2) SPI Interface: The 3-wire interface (CS, CLK, SDI) accepts 8-bit data words that set the wiper position. CS must be low during data transfer. Data is clocked MSB first on the rising edge of CLK, and the wiper updates on the CS rising edge. (3) High-Voltage Operation: The iCMOS process allows the analog signal range to extend from VSS to VDD, handling +/-15V signals when powered from dual +/-15V supplies. The digital inputs are referenced to GND and operate at standard logic levels regardless of the analog supply voltages. (4) Mid-Scale Preset: On power-up, the wiper defaults to the mid-scale position (code 128), ensuring a known starting state. Since the memory is volatile, the wiper position is lost on power-down.
