The 1SMA5920BT3G from onsemi is a 1.5 W surface mount Zener voltage regulator diode with a nominal 6.2 V Zener voltage and +/-5% tolerance. The low 2 Ohm Zener impedance at IZT=67mA provides stable voltage regulation under moderate load variation. The 4 uA leakage current at 4 V reverse voltage minimizes power waste. The SMA (DO-214AC) package provides a compact footprint with 1.5 W power dissipation capability. AEC-Q101 qualification ensures automotive-grade reliability. ESD Class 3 rating (>16 kV HBM) provides robust handling immunity.

The 1SMA5920BT3G operates in the reverse breakdown region as a Zener voltage regulator. At 6.2 V, the breakdown mechanism is a combination of Zener tunneling and avalanche multiplication. When reverse-biased voltage exceeds 6.2 V, the diode enters the breakdown region where current increases sharply while maintaining a nearly constant voltage across its terminals. The 2 Ohm dynamic impedance determines the voltage variation with changing current: a 10 mA change in operating current produces only a 20 mV change in Zener voltage. This tight regulation makes the device suitable as a voltage reference or clamp. In forward bias, the device behaves as a standard silicon diode with approximately 1.2 V forward voltage at 200 mA. The 1.5 W power rating is achieved through the SMA package’s thermal design with low thermal resistance from junction to lead.
