THVD1520DR from TI is a 3.3V/5V RS-485 transceiver with +/-16kV IEC ESD and true fail-safe. 500kbps for Modbus/BACnet. 1/4 unit load = 128 nodes. Fail-safe: open/short/idle bus = HIGH.

Working Principle

Differential driver converts TX to A/B bus signals. Receiver converts bus to RX. Fail-safe biases receiver threshold above 0V, so undriven bus = HIGH. DE/RE control driver/receiver enable.
