The TDF8546AJ is a 4-channel class-D audio power amplifier from NXP in HSOP-32, designed for automotive entertainment systems. It delivers 4 x 50W into 2-ohm speakers at 25V supply, or 4 x 25W into 4-ohm speakers at 14.4V. The Bridge-Tied-Load (BTL) output configuration doubles the voltage swing across the speaker: each channel uses two half-bridge outputs driven in anti-phase, so the speaker sees 2x the single-ended voltage swing. This provides 4x the output power compared to a single-ended output with the same supply voltage. The class-D architecture uses PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) at a fixed carrier frequency (typically 400kHz-500kHz), achieving approximately 85% efficiency versus 50% for class-AB at half power. The output filter (LC low-pass) removes the PWM carrier, recovering the audio signal. The I2C control interface allows individual channel volume control (-80dB to +30dB in 0.5dB steps), mute, standby, and diagnostic readback (over-temperature, short-circuit, open-load detection per channel). The device includes a clip detector that reduces gain to prevent output clipping. The diagnostic features report speaker faults via I2C, enabling the head unit to alert the driver. The HSOP-32 package has an exposed thermal pad that must be soldered to the PCB copper pour for heat dissipation.
