The PS2501AL-1-F3-A from Renesas Electronics (originally NEC, later CEL) is a single-channel phototransistor optocoupler in a 4-pin surface-mount gull-wing package. The L suffix indicates the gull-wing (lead-bending) surface-mount variant of the PS2501A-1 through-hole DIP version. The F3-A suffix indicates tape and reel packaging. The device provides 5000Vrms isolation voltage between input and output, making it suitable for reinforced isolation in power supply feedback and industrial control applications. The 80V VCEO rating is higher than many competing optocouplers, allowing direct connection to 24V industrial logic. The CTR ranges from 50% to 400% at IF=5mA, covering a wide range of drive conditions. The 3us rise time and 5us fall time are suitable for moderate-speed digital signal isolation. The UL recognized safety approval (No. E72422) facilitates compliance with end-equipment safety standards.

The PS2501AL-1-F3-A consists of a gallium arsenide (GaAs) infrared LED optically coupled to an NPN silicon phototransistor in a single 4-pin package. When forward current flows through the LED (IF), it emits infrared photons at approximately 940nm. These photons pass through the transparent dielectric isolation layer and strike the base region of the phototransistor, generating electron-hole pairs through photoelectric absorption. The photogenerated carriers create a base current that is amplified by the phototransistor’s current gain (hFE), producing a collector current IC = IF x CTR. The CTR of 50-400% means that for every 1mA of LED current, the phototransistor can sink 0.5 to 4mA of collector current. The wide CTR range reflects the natural variation in both LED coupling efficiency and phototransistor hFE across production lots. The 5000Vrms isolation is achieved through the physical separation between the LED and phototransistor chips and the dielectric properties of the transfer mold compound. The isolation resistance of 10^12 Ohm and capacitance of 0.5pF ensure minimal leakage and coupling between input and output circuits. The 80V VCEO is determined by the collector-base breakdown voltage of the phototransistor, allowing operation with higher supply voltages than typical 30V optocouplers.
