The LM7915CT/NOPB is a -15V 1A negative voltage regulator from Texas Instruments in TO-220, the negative complement to the LM7815 positive regulator. It regulates a negative output voltage using a series-pass NPN transistor in a common-emitter configuration controlled by a feedback loop. The internal architecture: (1) A bandgap voltage reference provides a stable -7V reference; (2) A resistor divider scales the output to match the reference; (3) An error amplifier drives the series-pass transistor. The dropout voltage is 2V at 1A (input must be at least 2V more negative than -15V). The quiescent current is 3mA typical. The regulator includes current limiting at 2.1A, thermal shutdown at 150C, and safe operating area protection. Note the pinout differs from the 78xx: pin 1 is GND, pin 2 is IN, pin 3 is OUT (vs 78xx: IN, GND, OUT). The TO-220 tab is connected to GND (not OUT as on some 78xx), allowing direct heatsink mounting without insulator when the heatsink is grounded. For dual-rail supplies, the LM7915 is paired with an LM7815: the positive rail uses LM7815 with GND connected to the common rail, and the negative rail uses LM7915 with GND also at the common rail. The -CT/NOPB suffix specifies TO-220, lead-free. Applications include: op-amp dual-rail power supplies, audio amplifier bias rails, and industrial analog circuits requiring +/-15V.
