The LM234DT is a three-terminal adjustable current source from TI in SOIC-8, operating over a 1000:1 current range from 1uA to 10mA. It is essentially a bandgap voltage reference (64mV at 25C, proportional to absolute temperature) with an internal NPN transistor that maintains this voltage across an external set resistor (RSET). The current through RSET is ISET = 64mV / RSET. For example, RSET = 6.4kOhm gives ISET = 10uA; RSET = 64Ohm gives ISET = 1mA. The total device current is ISET plus a bias current of approximately ISET/18 (for n = 18 ratio at 25C). The 64mV reference voltage has a positive temperature coefficient of +0.33%/C (proportional to absolute temperature, PTAT), making the LM234 useful as a temperature sensor: IOUT = ISET x (1 + 0.0033 x (T – 25C)). Operating voltage range is 1V to 40V, with compliance limited by the supply voltage minus the 1V minimum headroom. The LM234 (industrial, -25C to +100C) is the mid-grade version between LM134 (military) and LM334 (commercial). Applications include bias current generation, LED constant-current drive, battery trickle charging, and temperature sensing.
