The L7805CD2T-TR operates as a series linear voltage regulator using a feedback control loop. **Reference Subsystem**: A temperature-compensated bandgap reference generates a stable internal voltage that sets the 5V output. **Error Amplifier**: A differential amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage (via internal resistor divider) against the reference. The error signal drives the series pass transistor to maintain regulation. **Pass Transistor**: A power Darlington transistor operates in its linear region, dropping the excess input voltage as heat. The dropout voltage of 2V means the input must be at least 7V for guaranteed 5V output. **Protection Subsystem**: Thermal shutdown activates when junction temperature exceeds approximately 150C, disabling the pass transistor. Current limiting restricts output current during overload. Short-circuit protection reduces both current and power dissipation during fault conditions.
