The MP1584EN-LF-Z from Monolithic Power Systems (MPS) is a 3A, 1.5MHz, 28V step-down (buck) converter with an integrated high-side power MOSFET. It uses current-mode control for fast loop response and features programmable switching frequency, pulse skipping at light load, internal soft-start, and cycle-by-cycle current limiting. The SOIC8E thermally enhanced package provides excellent heat dissipation.

The MP1584EN-LF-Z is a high-frequency step-down switching regulator from Monolithic Power Systems with an integrated high-side high-voltage power MOSFET. It delivers up to 3A output current using current-mode control for fast transient response and simple compensation. The wide 4.5V to 28V input range accommodates automotive, industrial, and battery-powered applications. A 100µA quiescent current enables battery-powered designs, while the programmable switching frequency (100kHz to 1.5MHz) allows optimization between efficiency and solution size. At light loads, pulse skipping mode maintains high efficiency. The SOIC8E thermally enhanced package provides excellent thermal performance.

The MP1584EN-LF-Z operates as a current-mode buck converter. The high-side N-channel MOSFET switches ON to connect the input voltage to the inductor through the SW node, storing energy in the inductor. When the MOSFET turns OFF, the external Schottky catch diode conducts, allowing the inductor current to freewheel. The FB pin senses the output voltage through a resistive divider and compares it to the internal 0.8V reference. The error amplifier output (COMP pin) controls the peak inductor current through the current comparator. The FREQ pin sets the switching frequency via an external resistor (Rfreq = 180000/fsw_kHz). The EN pin provides enable/disable control. The BST pin supplies the floating gate driver through a bootstrap capacitor. Internal soft-start ramps the COMP voltage over approximately 2ms. Frequency foldback reduces switching frequency during startup and overcurrent to prevent inductor saturation.
