The LM7805CT is a 5V fixed-output positive voltage regulator from Texas Instruments in a TO-220 package, capable of delivering up to 1.5A output current from input voltages between 7V and 35V. As part of the legendary LM340/78xx series, it requires no external components for basic operation and includes comprehensive protection: thermal shutdown disables the output when junction temperature exceeds approximately 150C, short-circuit current limiting protects against output faults, and safe-area compensation prevents output transistor failure under high input-output differential voltages. The 73dB ripple rejection makes it effective at cleaning noisy input supplies.

The LM7805CT uses a series-pass transistor (NPN Darlington) controlled by an error amplifier that compares a fraction of the output voltage to an internal bandgap reference. The output voltage is divided by an internal resistor network and compared to the reference; any error drives the pass transistor to correct the output. The dropout voltage of approximately 2V is the minimum headroom required between input and output for proper regulation. Thermal shutdown uses a temperature-sensing circuit that disables the pass transistor when junction temperature exceeds the threshold. Current limiting is implemented by sensing the voltage across a current-sense resistor in series with the pass transistor.
